International Nurses Day (IND) is an universal day celebrated on 12th May of every year, to praise the commitments that nurses make to society. Background The International Council of Nurses (ICN) has commended this day since 1965. In 1953 Dorothy Sutherland, an authority with the U.S. Division of Health, Education and Welfare, recommended that President Dwight D. Eisenhower declare an "Attendants' Day"; he didn't favor it. In January 1974, 12 May was picked to commend the day as it is the commemoration of the introduction of Florence Nightingale, the author of present day nursing.
